Office rent has dropped, engineering talent pools have expanded to lower cost, yet equally accessible regions, and Zoom has reduced the cost for travel & time to revenue. Yet in the last several weeks I’ve met companies targeting $6-$8m to get to $1m ARR (if everything goes well) with nothing but a powerpoint and a design partner, if I’m lucky. When I look at the most recent Israeli seed funding announcements in the news, I see similar round sizes. From what I’m reading in Term Sheet and Crunchbase, mega & jumbo seed rounds are occurring more often in Israel in…

Yesterday I had the pleasure of hosting a conversation with Allen Miller, Yonatan Mandelbaum, and Vivek Krishnamurthy, all coming with unique Fintech knowledge. We covered a lot of ground — from payments to neobanks, vertical banks, crypto, POS lending, and COVID-19. Here are 9 takeaways.

[To watch the panel — head to Youtube. To listen, Spotify.]

Fintech market maturity depends on the use case: Payments have a 20+ year history of VC funding, while API-infrastructure and POS eCommerce lending are solutions we wouldn’t have imagined being worth $10b+ even as early as 2015. …

I came to Israel as a volunteer in 2012, teaching English and working in community centers in Karmiel, Arad, and Netivot, before spending two months in Tel Aviv. While in Tel Aviv I understood that there was an enormous gap between Israel’s startup community and the US market. Since moving back to Tel Aviv in 2015 and joining the Israeli VC community I’ve spent the last five years working to close this gap and build a stronger bridge between the US and Israeli tech markets. I plan to continue this work indefinitely.

Along the way I identified another big gap…

Last year we discussed the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of different funding sources in Israel. With 2020 in the rearview mirror, I’m happy to share our latest thoughts in Israel’s ever-evolving funding landscape. If you missed Chapter #1, “Do I need Venture Capital and how much should I Raise”, you can find it here!

If only the Israeli funding landscape was this beautiful

The early stage funding landscape has shifted dramatically in the past few years. Most of Israel’s “super angels” stopped making new investments and a cluster of pre-seed-only funds emerged. Equity crowdfunding platforms gave international investors access to start-ups on a deal-by-deal basis, while donation-based crowdfunding platforms…

Welcome back. It’s been too long :)

After publishing “Raising Your Seed Round: A Playbook for Israeli Entrepreneurs” in 2019, we spent the past few months expanding and updating the content to reflect new insights gathered over the past year. We’ll be releasing the full updated version in the coming weeks, but until then, I wanted to share a few of the chapters ahead of time and give you a head start! In this chapter we’ve added an overview of VC economics, COVID-19’s impact on fundraising, and our evolution in thinking about how much to raise at the seed. Hope you enjoy!

You found your co-founder(s). You…

Most of us couldn’t have even imagined a pandemic was a possible threat to our way of life, but here we are, engrossed in a crazy new chapter of Sapiens. Governments are imposing “draconian” measures on their citizens.

Am I the only one who thinks about Draco Malfoy every time I read “Draconian”?

What if I told you 3 weeks ago that bars & restaurants would be closed indefinitely? What if I told you that we can only watch sports and take classes online? Is this the beginning of the matrix? Or just a momentary glitch?

We are at an acceleration point. Things are about to speed up dramatically. Our only defense against Corona is…

Symptom-free doesn’t mean you aren’t contagious. Staying home means you care about the well-being of the vulnerable. Lyrics below if you want to learn the song :)

CORONA LIFE feat. Max Marine

Corona Life

A virus is going viral

Our neurons are getting tribal

Germs are flyin’ from mouth to mouth

Panic is moving from north to south

Sports and schools are on hold

So we can protect the weak and the old

Borders are closing, travel is slower

The stock market’s sinking lower and lower

Healthcare systems are stressed

Facing this test from the East to the West

Short…

Raising your Seed Round — a Playbook for Israeli Entrepreneurs

Yes this playbook is written for Israelis

After discussing how much to raise in Chapter #1, the various sources of funding in Chapter #2, VC organizational structure in Chapter #3, securing face-to-face Partner meetings in Chapter #4, guidance on how to prepare for these meetings in Chapter #5, meeting dynamics in Chapter #6, due diligence process factors in Chapter #7, in Chapter #8 I’ll discuss several of the risk factors that VCs aim to manage via the due diligence process and how you can address their concerns in an efficient manner.
